Annie Bos
Biography
Annie Bos was the biggest star of Dutch film in the 1910s. She played the lead role in most of the films made by Filmfabriek Hollandia during that period.
Her nickname was ‘the Dutch Asta Nielsen' (although she preferred to compare herself to the Italian actress Francesca Bertini).
At first Annie Bos was a stage actress, though she never really had a major breakthrough there. But this changed when Maurits H. Binger saw in her the ideal actress for his films. She excelled mainly in the long feature films that Hollandia produced during the First World War, often with Adelqui Migliar as her male counterpart.
After the First World War, her fame quickly waned. She still acted in a few co-productions made by Anglo-Hollandia (the successor to Filmfabriek Hollandia), but at the end of 1920 left the studio disappointed after she was considered too old for further roles.
After a brief adventure in the United States, where she played a role (under the name Anna Bosilova) in Without Fear (Kenneth S. Webb, 1922), she returned to the Netherlands. There she played one more film role, in 1924 (in Mooi Juultje van Volendam), after which she withdrew from the worlds of theatre and film.
