Filmfabriek F.A. Nöggerath
history
Beginning in 1896, the Amsterdam theatre director Franz Anton Nöggerath Sr. screened films in his theatre, Variété Flora.
In September of 1898, for the first time he had one of his own films made: the footage of Queen Wilhelmina's inauguration, which would go on to become famous. Thereafter, Filmfabriek F.A. Nöggerath began producing films in every imaginable genre. A film studio was built on the roof of the Variété Flora.
After a fire destroyed the Flora in 1902, the theater was rebuilt, again with a film studio on the roof. When F.A. Nöggerath Sr. died in December 1908, the leadership of the company was taken over by his son F.A. Nöggerath Jr.
He had a film studio built in Sloten, and produced fourteen feature films there. Unfortunately these films were not very successful, and in 1914 Nöggerath Jr. stooped the production of fiction films.
But the company remained active as an exhibitor and distributor (FAN Film). Nöggerath still sometimes shot occasional one-off footage of news items, for screening in his own theatres or for private cinema operators.
