Summary

During his long and respectable career, the superintendent of police has taken the names and addresses of 999 couples charged with adultery. Just one case more is needed for him to be awarded the knight's cross of the Legion of Honour. To his dismay, he discovers that the thousandth couple are his own young wife, to whom he was married that very morning, and the secretary of the Department of Public Morality. However, the exhibition of an amusing film teaches him that there are many other offenders for him to catch, so that he does not need to accuse his wife and will still get the red ribbon for his button-hole.
