Biography

The film pioneer Franz Anton Nöggerath, originally from Germany, moved in September 1891 from Brussels to Amsterdam, where he started a coffee house in the Warmoesstraat. In November 1892, he moved to the Amstelstraat, where he opened the theatre Variété Flora. Within a few years, this auditorium grew into one of Amsterdam’s most famous specialty theatres (the other was Carré).

The first film screenings in Flora were organized (by Madame Olinka) in October and November 1896. These were followed by screenings by Oskar Messter. From 1897 onwards, The Royal Bioscope (of Charles Urban’s Warwick Trading Company) was the regular film exhibitor in Flora. Nöggerath became this company’s representative in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway.

In September 1898, Nöggerath shot footage of the coronation of Queen Wilhelmina. After the great success of this footage, he began concentrating on producing films with the company Filmfabriek F.A. Nöggerath. For this purpose, he had a studio built in 1899 on the roof of the Variété Flora. Under his leadership, Filmfabriek F.A. Nöggerath grew into one of the major film production companies of Dutch cinema’s early years. Nöggerath himself acted mainly as a producer, while his colleagues Leon Boedels, Johann Theodor Vierboom, brother Karl Wilhelm, and son Theodor were responsible for the actual shooting of the films.

Until his death in 1908, Nöggerath remained one of the most important film pioneers in the Netherlands, for example by taking the initiative to build the first real film theatre in Amsterdam, the Bioscope-Theater. He also travelled frequently abroad to show his films, mainly in Germany. Nöggerath Sr. was succeeded by his son Franz Anton Nöggerath Jr., who had learned the film trade in England.
