Haghe Film
history
In October 1918, Willy Mullens changed the name of his production company 's-Gravenhaagsche Filmfabriek to Haghe Film. In the four decades that followed, the company became one of the largest Dutch producers of documentaries and corporate films.
In Haghe Film's early years, Willy Mullens used his reputation and business acumen to produce many films about Dutch cities and industries. In these films, he portrayed many facets of the Netherlands after World War One. In making these films, Mullens worked with organisations including the Commercieele en Industrieele Film, the Vereeniging Nederlandsch Fabricaat, and the Nederlandsch Centraal Filmarchief.
In addition to these films (which were usually not very long), Haghe Film in its early years also made a number of longer – sometimes dramatized – corporate films for e.g. the Vereeniging tot Bestrijding der TBC (Achter de wolken schijnt de zon, 1925).
In 1924 and 1926-1927, Mullens made two film expeditions to the Dutch East Indies to shoot films there for industrial and government clients.
In the 1930s and 1940s, Haghe Film’s productivity decreased, but the company remained important as a laboratory and as a subtitler of foreign films. For subtitling, the company used equipment that stamped or etched the Dutch subtitles into the emulsion. Haghe Film continued to exist until 1978, when the name was changed to the Color Film Center.
When this company went bankrupt, it was restarted under the old name Haghe Film. The new Haghe Film still exists, and is dedicated to the restoration of films. Later on, the company became a part of Cineco.
Willy Mullens stored many of the Haghe Film negatives at the Nederlandsch Centraal Filmarchief, of which he was one of the founders. He did so mainly to preserve the films for future generations, but ultimately also for his own benefit: when all of Haghe Film’s films were lost in a fire in December of 1928, Mullens was able to make new copies from the negatives that he had stored in the archive.
