Leeuwarden
Summary
Documentary about Leeuwarden.
Like many other ‘cities films’ from this period, this film begins with a panoramic shot of the city, filmed from a church tower. We see downtown Leeuwarden, its leafy suburbs, and its rural surroundings. This is followed by shots of the main buildings, streets and squares. The intertitles provide historical information. Leeuwarden is the ‘youngest’ of Friesland’s eleven cities, and by far its most urbanized one. The city used to be the official residence of the Viceroys of Oranje, a history we see reflected in a number of buildings, as well as a statue of the Count Willem Lodewijk van Oranje.
