Kinematograaf Pathé Frères

On December 5, 1905 Pathé Frères in Amsterdam opened the branch 'Pathé Frères, compagnie générale de phonographes, cinématographes et appareils de précision'.
This Amsterdam branch was part of a widespread network of European offices that Pathé set up around 1905 in order to take the sale of their films – and later their distribution – into their own hands.
The film department of the Amsterdam branch became independent in 1911, and had its own office: Cinématographes Pathé Frères (Kinematograaf Pathé Frères). The department was initially led by L. Infroit, until Louis Justet took over the leadership in 1913. In addition to its headquarters in Amsterdam, Kinematograaf Pathé Frères also had a branch in Rotterdam. From 1911-1923, the company also operated the Amsterdam Theater Pathé.
Starting in 1911, Kinematograaf Pathé Frères shot a number of feature films meant to be shown abroad. Only a limited number of these films were distributed by Pathé in the Netherlands. The director of these films was the Belgian Alfred Machin, who worked with an almost entirely Belgian-French cast and crew.
In 1912, Pathé began producing Dutch news items. These were included in Pathé's own newsreel, the Pathé Courant, surrounded by news items from France and other parts of the world. The regular cameramen were Herman van Luijnen and – in the early years – Verduin. Some Dutch news items mention the name Pathé Amsterdam in the intertitles.
