Summary

Melodrama about two brothers who are in love with the same woman.

Jan and Peter, sons of the old sailor Spilser, are not only good brothers but also good friends until, at the village fair, they meet and both fall in love with pretty Kaatje. Jan, however, is Kaatje's favoured suitor. The next time the brothers go to sea with the fishing fleet, Peter, filled with jealousy, pushes his brother overboard and, when he returns to the harbour, tells his parents that Jan drowned accidentally.

Despite his remorse, and shocked by a vision in which Jan and Kaatje accuse him of murder, he still hopes to marry Kaatje. However, Jan has been saved by some fishers and he comes back home to confront his brother. Just in time, Jan prevents Peter from committing suicide. Now that Jan and Kaatje are reunited, they forgive Peter his crime. He, now aware of his brother's true nobility, will be content to see Jan and Kaatje happily married.
