Filmverhuurkantoor Union

history

In 1909, theatre owner Paul Davidson in Berlin founded the Produktions AG Union (PAGU) for the production of films for his own cinemas. PAGU quickly grew into one of the most prestigious production companies in Germany.

The company made, for example, films with Asta Nielsen – Europe's first film star – in the leading role.

In early 1911, the group also opened a cinema in Amsterdam: the Union-Theater on the Heiligeweg. Siegfried Levy was the general manager of this cinema, and Johan Gildemeijer worked there during its first years as the business manager.

In 1912, the Filmverhuurkantoor Union was also established. In 1917, this office was taken over by Nordisk Film.
