De zigeunerin
Summary
Professor Mortman, of the University of Amsterdam, who has discovered a new and powerful explosive powder, one day sees Tiska, a young gipsy girl, being ill-treated by a member of her tribe, Miarko, her step-father. The Professor goes to rescue her. The next day Tiska goes to thank her rescuer, and when she is introduced to the Professor's sister, they decide to adopt her. Some time later the gipsies plan to rob the Professor's house, and it is here that Tiska is able to repay the debt she owes by rescuing him from the attack. In the meantime, the Professor's son, Jack Mortman, comes home from Java. Jack and Tiska spend many happy moments together before he has to go to New York.
Some time after Jack has left, Tiska grows to love the Professor, and in the end marries him. One day her husband, while experimenting in his laboratory, accidentally causes an explosion, which deprives him of his sight. Then the son returns, who all along has been in love with Tiska, but she tells him that it cannot be, and finally asks him to go away. Her husband's suspicion, however, has been aroused, and hearing them talking he asks who the man is, telling her that unless she informs him he will blow them all up. Tiska sacrifices herself and will not tell him, but runs into the laboratory with Jack. The old man follows, and his hand touches the powder, an explosion occurs, and all three are instantly killed.
