Actueel Film
history
The distributor Actueel-Film was founded in 1923 by Alex Benno and Fred Penley. Penley left the company soon afterwards, after which Benno ran the company alone. Actueel-Film distributed many films made by Haarlem's Filmfabriek Hollandia (Benno's former employer) and its successors Anglo-Hollandia-film and Granger-Binger-film.
Although Actueel-Film primarily rented out films, the company also ventured into producing several feature films in the mid-1920s, with reasonable success. Yet Alex Benno produced most of his films at The Dutch Film Co, a company where he was the general manager, and Theo Frenkel Sr. directed the films.
Actueel-Film's last production was the sound film Amsterdam bij nacht. The film was directed by Alex Benno and produced by Rudolf Meyer. Amsterdam bij nacht would remain Actueel-Film's only sound film, though Benno himself was involved in several Dutch sound films in the 1930s.
