Theo Frenkel Senior
Biography
Theo Frenkel was a descendant of the famous Bouwmeester theatrical family. He also chose for an artistic career, and achieved international success with his transformational piece 'Brand in De Jonge Jan'.
In 1908 he made his first film, at the invitation of Charles Pathé. In the years that followed, he directed several hundred short feature films for the foreign companies Hepworth, Urban, Pathé, Messter, and Eiko-Film.
In 1914, Frenkel returned to the Netherlands to direct the film Fatum for Johan Gildemeijer's company Rembrandt Film Co.
He then founded the Amsterdam Film Cie with several businessmen, and directed various feature films there. After a series of disagreements, Frenkel left in 1922 to set up his own production company, Theo Frenkel Film Cie. In the early 1920s, Frenkel made several co-productions with German companies, including for his own company.
After a brief period with The Dutch Film Company, Frenkel retired from the film world and became the editor of the Dutch news weekly ‘De Wereldkroniek’. Thereafter he appeared only occasionally as a director or actor.
