Mariken van Nieumeghen

Summary

Mariken van Nieumeghen tells the story of a young girl who, at a time when the plague was raging through the Southern Netherlands, falls under the spell of the Devil for a period of seven years.

This colourful spectacle is often reminiscent of old paintings of the Flemish School and the mise-en-scène is of an unflagging liveliness, the emphasis being laid on strictly pictorial beauty.

Jos Stelling's film drew comparisons to Pasolini for its raw depictions of the Middle Ages.
