Alberts Frères

De gebroeders Albert en Willy Mullens waren vanaf eind negentiende eeuw actief als reisbioscoopexploitanten. Ze begonnen als Koninklijk Cagliostro-Theater, maar veranderden hun naam in 1901 in Alberts Frères.
De eerste paar jaar onderscheidden ze zich nog niet van hun beroepsgenoten, maar daar kwam rond 1903 verandering in. Zo zorgden ze ervoor dat ze een mooie, luxueuze tent hadden met goede muzikale begeleiding, technisch perfecte projectie en altijd de nieuwste en mooiste films. Vaak wisten ze als eersten nieuwe films van Pathé Frères te bemachtigen, nog voor deze officieel in de catalogi werden aangeboden.
Dankzij hun voorstellingen 's zomers in een bioscooptent en 's winters in verenigingsgebouwen en theaters werden zij met recht geprezen als 'les rois de bioscope'. Willy Mullens maakte ook naam als explicateur.
Grote populariteit verwierf Alberts Frères met de 'sprekende bioscoop' (filmvertoningen met grammofoongeluid) en met hun zelf geproduceerde korte speelfilms en documentaires. Het merendeel van deze films namen ze tussen 1904 en 1907 op in hun eigen atelier in Breda.
De meeste roem en succes brachten echter de op locatie opgenomen korte speelfilms, waaronder Ah! Ah! Die Oscar, De mésaventure van een Fransch heertje zonder pantalon aan het strand te Zandvoort en De jacht op Frans Rosier.
Vanaf 1909 legden de gebroeders Mullens zich steeds meer toe op vertoningen op vaste locaties. Zo exploiteerden ze onder andere bioscopen in Haarlem en Den Haag. In 1911 scheidden hun wegen.
Albert Mullens werd directeur van het Amsterdamse Grand Théâtre en hield zich nog incidenteel met film bezig.
Willy Mullens bleef actief als producent en vertoner, in zijn eigen Residentie-Bioscoop in Den Haag. Tot 1918 vertoonde en produceerde hij nog onder de naam Alberts Frères, daarna richtte hij voor de productie van zijn films een nieuwe maatschappij op: de 's-Gravenhaagsche Filmfabriek, die na enkele maanden werd omgedoopt in Haghe Film. De naam Alberts Frères bleef tot midden jaren twintig gehandhaafd voor Willy Mullens' voorstellingen in zijn eigen bioscoop of in het Gebouw voor Kunsten en Wetenschappen te Den Haag.
