Prince Hendrik of the Netherlands
Biography
As the third son from the third marriage of Duke Frederik Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Heinrich van Mecklenburg-Schwerin had little chance of becoming the heir.
But when a husband was sought in 1898 for the newly inaugurated, eighteen-year-old Dutch Queen Wilhelmina – who as an only child was under pressure to produce heirs – he seized his chance. In 1900, the engagement was announced, and one year later the arranged marriage took place in The Hague. From then on, Heinrich was known as ‘Hendrik’; he became a Dutch citizen, and also was given the title Prince of the Netherlands.
Because he was in all respects subordinate to his wife as Prince Consort, Prince Hendrik soon began to suffer from an image problem. The ceremonial duties associated with his position did not suit him, in part due to his strong German accent and unfamiliarity with Dutch etiquette. But when the ferry-boat Berlin sunk at the Hoek van Holland in 1907, the Prince won much appreciation for visiting the rescuers and salvage workers who pulled up the drowned. He later became active in various social organizations, including a role as the Chairman of the Dutch Red Cross, and as a patron of the Boy Scouts.
The birth of Princess Juliana in 1909 came as a great relief to everyone, but the marriage of Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik continued to deteriorate. In the early 1920s, Hendrik faced various health issues, and after a previous heart attack, he died of an unexpected second heart attack in 1934. Hendrik, who became interested in Eastern mysticism in his final years, requested white as the official mourning colour. Touched by the death of her husband, Wilhelmina also used the colour white as the mourning colour at her own funeral.
