Biography

Henri Plaat trained as a typographer, and began his career as a graphic artist. He began as a visual artist in 1963, with gouaches, collages and photographs. From 1966 onwards, he also made short fiction films and travel films, usually with a small hand-held 16-millimeter camera. The travel films were almost always about the beauty of decay and lost glory. Spurs of Tango, a quest that was filmed in several South American countries in search of a glimmer of the tango’s heyday, won a Golden Calf in 1981.

Plaat’s short fiction films were often about the Second World War, and usually have absurd elements; this category would include the films Second War Hats, for which Plaat received the L.J. Jordaan Prize in 1987.
