Dik Trom en het circus

Summary

Children’s film about Dik Trom, based on the successful series by C. Joh. Kieviet. Dik Trom helps an old lady who is about to lose her house.

Dik Trom sees that Oude Kee is evicted from her house because she can’t pay the rent. He feels sorry for the old lady and makes sure she can stay. When the circus comes to the village, he wins ten guilders by staying on a bucking donkey. He wants to spend the money on a new bicycle but when he hears that Oude Kee has been robbed he gives the money to her. The mayor, impressed by this noble deed, gives him ten guilders so Dik can buy his bicycle after all.

Director Henk van der Linden is regarded as the pioneer of the Dutch children’s film. Between 1952 and 1985 he made around forty full length feature films. Most of these were based on popular children’s books and cartoons such as 'De avonturen van Dik Trom' (Dik Trom’s adventures), 'Sjors en Sjimmie' (George and Jimmy) and 'Billy Turf' (Billy Bunter). The director, who liked to have his own way, not only wrote, produced and directed the film but acted as set designer, cameraman and editor, too.
