Self-taught film-maker Harry Kümel started his career as scriptwriter for Rik Kuypers and Herman Wuyts. He soon set out shooting films himself, short experimental films (Anna la bonne, after Jean Cocteau), fiction shorts (Tous les parfums de l'Arabie) and documentaries (Uit glas en staal).

Rechter Thomas

Social drama about an elderly judge who tries to keep a young delinquent on the straight and narrow.

In Rechter Thomas, an elderly judge crosses paths with a young delinquent (Ton van Duinhoven) who looks exactly like his dead son. He decides to help him where he can but the boy betrays his trust by escaping prison and turning to crime once again. He flees to the house of the judge who supplies him with an alibi for a robbery turned murder. The judge knows he is putting his career at stake but he feels it is worth it for the boy’s sake.

Crime film with cartoon hero Dick Bos

A daring train robbery by an obscure gang called Nemesis is making headlines. When the gang members also kill a partner in a The Hague fashion house and threaten the other owners of the firm, they turns to Dick Bos for help in solving the Nemesis mystery.

Moord in het modehuis was directed by Piet van der Ham and cartoonist Alfred Mazure, who created the Dick Bos character. The lead role in this semi-professional production was played by Maurice van Nieuwenhuizen, a famous judo champion at the time.

Ibiza, zon en zonde

In the early 1960s Ibiza became a favourite destination among Dutch artists and writers. The sunny Spanish island could not have been more of a contrast to the sombre post-war dreariness of the Netherlands and proved an inspiration to people like writers Jan Cremer, Cees Nooteboom, Harry Mulisch and photographer Cas Oorthuys.

Pierre rents a room in a small hotel on the coast. He has been on the run since he killed his adulterous wife in a fit of jealousy five years earlier. His hide-out has been discovered by an acquaintance from Paris who reports him to the police. A number of people are willing to help him to escape but Pierre commits suicide.

Flanagan

Paul Flanagan has served an eight-year sentence for his part in a robbery. He has been released, unexpectedly, and renews his contact with his girl friend, Cathy, and his half-brother, Peter Babel, both of whom deserted him in his time of need. Paul Flanagan's aim is to find out the whereabouts of the money from the robbery, which his half-brother has hidden away somewhere, for fear of discovery.
