In the 1920s, informative films like this one were shown in so-called 'school cinemas’. This film, produced for Rotterdam’s Gemeentelijke Schoolbioscoop by its former director A.M. van der Wel, shows rescue exercises being performed by the Zuid-Hollandsche Redding-Maatschappij. The exercises with rowboat lifeboats took place at the Hook of Holland’s Noorderpier, as well as near the village of Ter Heide in the municipality of Westland, which was destroyed by waves four separate times during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Intertitles provide extra information about the rescue efforts, such as the importance of the ‘connection between the shore and a ship in distress, or between a rescue vessel and a ship in distress’.
