Images of a Moving City
Summary
With particular attention paid to the everyday, director Karel Doing made a documentary poem about the city of Rotterdam and its inhabitants. In a series of high-contrast black and white images, Doing observes the people, roads, and buildings that make up the atmosphere of a constantly changing multicultural city. Traveling by car, train, or subway, Doing also considers the aesthetics of an incinerator or a traffic intersection. When he points his camera at the highway, a gradual curve turns into a game of swirling lines. In the city, and without comment, he follows several residents who find their own way amid Rotterdam’s high-rise towers. Images of a City Moving is like a visit to Rotterdam, with time to think about where everyone is coming from and where everyone is going.
