Elckerlyc

Summary

This film adaptation of the medieval morality play ‘Den Spiegel der Salighijt van Elckerlijc’ (Everyman) was filmed in Het Gravensteen, a 13th century castle in the Belgian town of Ghent.

During the summer of 1974, two hundred people went for a three-week stay at the castle, taking four large lorries full of costumes and decors with them. None of them were professional actors, as it was Jos Stelling's ideal to produce films with ordinary people in the cast, in the manner of the medieval plays.

The cast and production crews did not receive any form of salary, but shared in what profits were made, just as with Stelling's previous film Mariken van Nieumeghen.
