De Jantjes (1934)

Summary

Two sailors return from militairy service to their tough working class life in Amsterdam. 

This archetypical Jordaan-film, (i.e. set in the Amsterdam working class neighbourhood the Jordaan) tells the story of two sailors, Cross-eyed Manus and Daft Dries. The two men return from military service in the Dutch East Indies to their friends and relatives in the Jordaan. Jobs are scarce and life isn't easy. Their love lives don't look very promising either. While Jans and Blonde Greet try to make something of their lives, Manus and Dries take the easy way out and sign on for another tour of duty.

Director Jaap Speyer and cameraman Akos Farkas used some beautiful, authentic shots of Amsterdam which contributed greatly to the film's popularity. Songs like 'Draaien, altijd maar draaien!' (The organ grinder's song) and 'Omdat ik zoveel van je hou' (Because I love you so much), sung by music hall stars Sylvain Poons and Heintje Davids turned the film into a Jordaan classic and an all time audience favourite. De Jantjes, the second Dutch sound film, was the first film to be shot at 'Holland's Hollywood', or the Cinetone Studios in Duivendrecht.
