The story - as far as described in reviews - is about De Jager, an opera singer known as Renzoni, and his married daughter Alda, who leaves her husband and two children in order to devote her life to the art of singing. De Jager's wife has died of consumption. Under the professional name La Renzoni Alda is a great success when she appears on the stage together with her father. She is surrounded by wealthy admirers, including a Prince who offers her a diamond necklace, but desires more from her than a platonic friendship. Her indignant refusal of the gift reveals the purity of the woman's character. Alda's husband, who believes that Renzoni is Alda's seducer and lover (apparently they have never met), in a fit of jealousy shoots his father-in-law dead. Regretting the life she has been leading, Alda returns to her home, but her repentance comes too late. She dies of the disease that killed her mother.
