Frederieke Jochems
Biography
Frederieke Jochems graduated from the State University of New York at Binghamton (United States), the Vrije Academie in The Hague, and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. She has been making films since the early 1980s, mostly for her own company Franjo Filmprodukties, which she set up together with Andras Hamelberg.
Both alone and with Andras Hamelberg, she made a number of experimental films in which the power of the image is the central theme: ‘Pictures should speak for themselves. The power of images is independent of the people or objects that are depicted. The idea is to create a new meaning, and to make a stunning, mysterious and/or uncomfortable image. With a bit of humour’.
In recent years, Jochems has been focusing on photography, and has been making documentaries about social and cultural issues. She is also a visual artist who works on art projects in public space.
