Frank Scheffer
Biography
Frank Scheffer graduated from the Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie in 1982. He directs and produces documentaries. In 1997, his work won the Prize of the Dutch Film Critics at the Nederlands Film Festival.
Frank Scheffer studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven and at the Nederlandse Filmacademie. He also attended workshops that were given by Frans Zwartjes at the Vrije Academie in The Hague.
His first films had a documentary character, but the focus soon shifted to music. Scheffer developed his own style, and made experimental films about classical composers such as Wagner and Mahler, but also about modern composers such as Cage and Carter. These were both short experimental films as well as long documentaries, in which the form was always inspired by the music of the underlying principles, for example in I Tjing.
Beginning in the 1990s, these experiments also started to focus on other, newer media, such as VJ culture and digital techniques, whereby these techniques are explored, with the backdrop of music theory or musical principles forming an important source of inspiration.
