Barbara Meter
Biography
Barbara Meter graduated from the Nederlandse Filmacademie in 1963. In the early 1970s, she joined the Amsterdam Film Coop and the Studio ter Ontwikkeling van Film en Filmmanifestaties (STOFF). She was one of the driving forces behind Electric Cinema, a stronghold of experimental film, which organized screenings. In 1974, the members of STOFF and Electric Cinema separated. Meter developed into a political/feminist filmmaker, and was a co-founder of POLKIN (Political Kinema).
In the 1980s, she returned to experimental film; since then she has made about twenty films, including internationally known titles such as Departure on Arrival and Appearances. From 1991-2005, she worked in part in London, and from 1998 to 2001 that was her permanent residence.
Meter also worked as a lecturer at the Academie Minerva in Groningen and at the San Francisco Art Institute.
