Alex Benner
Biography
Alex Benner was a travelling cinema operator from Dordrecht. At first he travelled the country with his Kristallen Lichtpaleis, a carnival tent with thousands of lights that seemed to conjure up magical landscapes. At the beginning of the 20th century, he traded in this attraction for a travelling cinema.
Together with Alberts Frères, Hommerson et Fils, and later Jean Desmet as well, he was part of the second generation of mobile exhibitors who managed to elevate ‘carnival films’ to a major attraction. In luxurious theatre tents, they showed the newest and best movies, accompanied by live music and explication. Benner and Alberts Frères also showed 'talking movies' with synchronized gramophone sound.
Benner shot a few of his own films as well, but these were not of high quality.
In 1908 and 1909, Benner owned the stationary cinema Alex Benner's Bioscope Theater in Leiden. From 1911 to 1924, he was the general manager of the Bioscope Theatre in Bergen op Zoom.
