Zeemansvrouwen

Summary

Melodrama about a simple woman from Amsterdam who is forced to choose between the depraved father of her children and the love of a kind-hearted sailor.

Willem, an honest sailor, is head over heels in love with pretty Leen but she has fallen for good-for-nothing Lau who makes her pregnant and is arrested in the wake of a bungled robbery. Before he sets off to sea, Willem tells Leen that she can always depend on him. When he comes home, Lau is still in prison. In the meantime, Leen has had twins. Willem keeps his promise and marries her.

When Lau is freed and comes to see Leen, Willem realises that his wife is still in love with his former rival. He decides he would rather go to sea again than endure the endless quarrels that are wrecking the marriage. Lau then moves in and squanders what little money Leen earns selling fish. One day, Leen faints from exhaustion and is taken to hospital.

Egged on by his mistress, Lau takes the children to an orphanage. Then Willem returns and beats the truth out of Lau. Exactly at that moment, Leen arrives. They are reconciled in a heartrending scene and the family heads for a happy future.
