Summary

Footage of a beach competition for children organized by the newspaper ‘De Telegraaf’, on Tuesday, August 9, 1921.

The beach contest in Scheveningen drew a large crowd of onlookers. In the film, singer Antoinette van Dijk welcomes all the children with small flags bearing De Telegraaf’s logo. This is followed by the performance of a trumpeter. We see Scheveningen’s pier, with strolling people and a band. On the crowded beach, children build sand sculptures of boats, mills, castles, and cars.

The jury - Antoinette van Dijk, Willy Sluiter, and Mr. Van Gheel Gildemeester – have to judge more than a thousand sand sculptures. In a long line, the children leave the beach, waving their Telegraaf flags. The prize ceremony takes place on the terrace of the Kurhaus, where the prizes are displayed on a long table: a model steam engine for the boys, and a wristwatch for the girls. At the end, a group of children hold up lettered signs that together form the words ‘De Telegraaf’.
