Summary

Observations are six short documentaries which examine everyday life in a melancholy and humorous way. The observations radiate the joy of looking.

1 - My Street

Construction work on an Amsterdam street.

2 - Evening

At Amsterdam’s Albert Cuyp market, the stalls are taken down every evening. The garbage truck comes dangerously close.

3 - Lock and Quay

Ship traffic along the locks. We see what two people do when they have to wait for hours.

4 - The Big Whale

The ferries transport their passengers across the IJ harbour. A film about the meditative aspects of waiting.

5 - Join the Army

A look behind the scenes of the Dutch army. We see the conscripts during their first field exercise.

6 - Did You Enjoy?

During a holiday, Surinamese and Antilleans visit the Dutch villages of Marken, Volendam, and Wijk aan Zee.
