Summary

Because he is out of work, a young fisherman is forced to stay on land. First he loses his few possessions and then his sweetheart to her neighbour, a pawnbroker.

After searching for a long time, he finds a job assisting a man who organizes donkey-rides on the beach. He wastes his wages on drink, but the following morning walks to the sea to recover his strength.

Meanwhile, his sweetheart is enjoying herself at the kermis together with her neighbour. The young man returns to the village intending to settle accounts with his rival. But then he pulls himself together, throws his knife away and decides to forget the girl. On the next fishing-boat to leave the harbour, he sails away.
