Nederlandsche Biograaf- en Mutoscope Maatschappij

history

In December of 1898, the Nederlandsche Biograaf- en Mutoscope Maatschappij (NB&MM) was established as a subsidiary of the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company.

The company dealt in mutoscopes (early film projectors) and organised film screenings in both large variety theatres as well as in association buildings and small theatres throughout the country.

The general manager of the company was Daniel Louis Uyttenboogaart. The NB&MM also produced several films, mostly news items and other occasional one-off films. The company made, for example, seven short films that were screened during the theatrical revue 'De nieuwe prikkel' (1899) as 'Levende Geïllustreerde Reuzen-Briefkaarten' ('giant living illustrated postcards').

At the end of 1899, the NB&MM stopped showing films, and the rights to the Biograph films went to the travelling cinema operator C. Gubbels. The NB&MM was declared bankrupt on June 27, 1902.
