Help, de dokter verzuipt

The bestseller on which this comedy was based provided director Nikolai van der Heyde with plenty of picturesque atmosphere as the basis of a sparkling village adventure, set in the late 1920s.

Everyday life proceeds in its lazy rhythm around the leading figure, a country doctor. When he falls hopelessly in love with the frail young school mistress, he realises how inexperienced he is in this field. It seems the course of true love will not run smooth for him, but he is aided and abetted by the village's pastor, who has little authority but plenty of good spirits.

Dorp aan de rivier

Screen version of Antoon Coolen’s regional novel about a strong headed village doctor.

In around 1900 Tjerk van Taeke sets up a medical practice in a small village in the southern province of Brabant. The local poor appreciate his help but the village worthies won’t have anything to do with him. The doctor befriends a poacher who tells him colourful stories about the village and its inhabitants and so introduces him to the real Brabant. When van Taeke’s wife dies, however, he feels there is nothing left to keep him there and he leaves.

Leger- en vlootfilm

Propaganda Film About the Dutch Military.

Holland neutraal (Neutral Holland) is this film’s subtitle, which was meant to show that the Dutch armed forces are very much prepared to guarantee the Netherlands’ neutrality in World War One. The more than 2.5-hour film was made by Willy Mullens in 1917, when other Western European armies had become numbed after three long years in the trenches. The footage in the Army and Navy Film depicts a relatively high-spirited mood, considering how the Dutch military had mobilized but not actually participated in the war.
