Vadertje Langbeen
Summary
Romantic comedy about an orphan girl who falls in love with her anonymous benefactor.
Judy Aalders (Lily Bouwmeester) grows up in an orphanage. Albert Woudenberg happens to be present when Judy confronts the trustees of the orphanage. She is expelled and has to find her own way in the world. Albert decides to send her to university and Judy, who has only ever seen her benefactor's shadowy long legs, calls him Daddy-long-legs from that day. Judy and Albert's relationship gradually turns into love and when he finally tells her who he is, nothing stands in the way of a happy future.
Vadertje Langbeen is based on Jean Webster's novella and the popular theatre production 'Daddy-Long-Legs' from 1912. There would be many other screen versions, among which the 1931 production featuring Janet Gaynor and Warner Baxter and the 1955 musical with Leslie Caron and Fred Astaire.
Director Friedrich Zelnik (1885) was one of the many German film artists who had found refuge in the Netherlands during the 1930s. Apart from Vadertje Langbeen he also directed Morgen gaat het beter! in which Lily Bouwmeester plays an impetuous Cinderella.
