Biography

Nurse and founder of the Boddaert Home for ‘difficult childhood’. Elisabeth Boddaert came from a wealthy family and spent her early childhood in courtly circles.

She was directly confronted with the malaise of society’s lower echelons for the first time as a nurse in Edinburgh, Scotland. Under the motto ‘overcome evil with good’, in 1903 she opened her first shelter for problematic youth in the Netherlands.

After school, children were hospitably welcomed here. The Boddaert Home stood out in the way it offered tender and individualized attention to the pupils. Discipline was not the order of the day here, but the daily schedule was strict, and neatness and cleanliness were of paramount importance.
