A councillor in a small provincial town does not want his family to know that he is a variety artist and therefore pretends that he is a travelling salesman in order to explain his continual absence from home. In the second part of the prologue, his wife and daughter are sitting in a theatre and suddenly see their husband and father appearing on the screen. They make such a hubbub that they are turned out of the auditorium. In the second act, taking place in a film studio, the public is given an idea of how films are made. They see an apache scene and some dance duets. The councillor/variety artist, in order to delude his wife and daughter, is obliged to appear in a number of disguises, even as a handcuff expert like Houdini, until he finally has to make a frank confession about his stage activities. And that signifies the end of his career as a variety artist.
