Singende Jugend

Summary

Youth film about the experiences of an orphan boy who ends up with the Vienna Boys' Choir; co-production with the Dutch distributor C.A. Bruyn of Meteor-Film.

With the help of a street musician, the orphan Toni finds refuge with the Vienna Boys' Choir, where Sister Mary cares for him like a surrogate mother. During their annual summer stay in Tyrol, the Boys' Choir discovers that a substantial amount of money has been stolen. When Maria becomes a suspect, Toni takes the blame for her and runs away. The street musician believes Toni is innocent, and tries to find the real thief. Toni has fallen into a mountain creek, but has since been rescued. The money is also found; it turns out to have been buried in a stack of sheet music.

The main attraction of Singende Jugend was the presence of the Vienna Boys' Choir. The film was originally intended to be produced as a multi-language version, as was the case with another Meteor Film co-production, the Austrian-Dutch De vier Mullers. Ultimately, though, only an Austrian (German-language) version of Singende Jugend was made.
