Regen

Summary

A Dutch symphony of a city.

For two years, Joris Ivens and Mannus Franken worked on this cinematic poem about a passing rain shower in Amsterdam. At the beginning, it is dry. Then the clouds gather and the canopies flutter in the rising wind. The first drops of rain fall on the canals; a man turns up his collar. A window closes, an umbrella is opened, and the storm breaks loose. This is a silent series of black and white images shot from various perspectives, a song of shapes, light, and shadow. Ships, filmed from above, pass through the image; sunlight falls through a window; the shadows of passers-by; circles in the water. (Canon van de Nederlandse film)
