Summary
Young David goes swimming in the North Sea with some friends. He gets into difficulties but is saved by Henk. Thereafter, David often goes to the Kredorp home for games with Mol, a girl of his own age. Then, suddenly, David's visits cease. Henk finds out that David's mother has died and that the boy is now living with his uncle. Some time later, Henk gets into difficulties in a slum quarter to which he has gone disguised as a tramp in order to find out something about a gang of criminals. The crooks, seeing an expensive cuff-link that Henk is wearing, realize that he does not belong among them and, believing that he is a detective, lock him up in a cellar. It is David who is then able to rescue Henk by calling the police. Thereafter David is affectionately taken into the Kredorp home, and, on the occasion of his birthday, is given a set of cuff-links.
