Afstra 1 - 1973/74

Summary

For the films Afstra 1-4, the visual artist made use of computer-generated images. The films show a number of points that move in certain patterns across the film screen.

At the beginning of the films, we see the same text, which describes the starting point for the film as follows:

From any arbitrary initial state, points reach their final state under the influence of certain conditions. Between the initial and the final state, both the radius and the position of each point can change. The changes to these points are caused because the points have to undergo a certain dependence on the various differences in distance, and their various radial connections.

Using the computer program Afstra, the various stages of the change are calculated.

The intention of the film is to demonstrate that the conditions formulated in the computer program, with respect to the various differences in the points’ distance and radius, result in a visually perceptible, specific pattern of changes.
