Volksgaarkeukens

history

Around the end of the 19th century, many soup kitchens were established in the Netherlands, usually at the initiative of the municipality. At these soup kitchens, the poor could get a meal for a small fee. Especially in times of crisis, such as during the First and Second World Wars, many people relied on this provision. Around 1970, most of the soup kitchens were closed down.
