The NIFM was established in the spring of 1925 by Filmfabriek Polygoon, with the aim of producing films about the Dutch East Indies. In June of 1925, cameraman I.A. Ochse left for the Dutch East Indies, where he shot footage for e.g. the film Naar tropisch Nederland. De NIFM was located in Buitenzorg, now known as Jakarta.
