Volendammers

Documentary about the inhabitants of Volendam.

Shots of Volendam, Urk, Spakenburg, and Marken were very popular in the early years of film. These villages had much to offer filmically, including their special traditional costumes, picturesque houses, and a charming fishing harbour. In an age where romance and strong traditions were still very much alive, towns like this stirred the imagination. In this film, the Volendammers get a chance to show what they can do.

Voetbal

After a thrilling match won by the Haarlem Football Club HFC, a youthful supporter listens to the tall stories told by older members of the club in the local café. That night, because of his excitement, the boy has a nightmare in which he alone has to defend the HFC goal, even against a gigantic football.

He is so successful that his club wins the match. However, the plucky young goalkeeper is then chased by a gang of angry farmers with pitchforks. They get hold of him, but then the boy is shaken awake by his father.

Vlissingen

Documentary about the city of Vlissingen.

Documentary by filmmaker Willy Mullens about the sights and attractions of Vlissingen. The intertitles offer historical background information. As in many of Mullens' ‘city films’, this film begins with a panoramic shot filmed from a tower. The city, the Scheldt river, and the city’s industries are shown. The documentary devotes considerable attention to the ports and the shipyards, to pilotage, and to the Vlissingen heroes Michiel de Ruyter and Frans Naerebout.
