After years of touring abroad with his "Cirque Hollandais", Hendrik van Dalen returns to Holland, hoping that his brother Willem, a well-to-do farmer, will be able to help him with money.

Berna and his wife Julia, both well-known stage personalities, lead a pleasant life together with their little daughter Gonda until the moment that Berna meets the young actress Jeane Bachiloupi.
