Summary

A collection of separate scenes, composed of fragments from the past. An Egyptian beggar on a rolling board in Luxor. An elderly woman in a bed, with a feather drifting down on her. Around her are some women, whose black shoes shuffle across the floor. A much younger woman with a veil and a black hat talks on the phone about ‘bitter lemons’. A German episode in Berlin consisting of an open door, white light, and a departing train: reality is interspersed with dreams.
