Gemeente Utrecht-jaarbeurs 1920/1921
Summary
Reportage about the Utrecht Trade Fairs in 1920 and 1921, with images of Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Henry.
On February 23, 1920, the opening of the Utrecht trade fair was held at the Stadsschouwburg. The film contains shots of members of the Board of Directors, and of Mayor Fockema Andreae visiting various stands. On September 6, 1921, Prince Hendrik opens the trade fair building at Utrecht’s Vredenburg. On hand are Mayor Fockema Andreae, architect Jan de Bie Leuveling Tjeenk, and Messrs. Van Doorninck Graadt and Graadt van Roggen from the board of the Maatschappij tot exploitatie van Jaarbeursgebouwen. A day later, Queen Wilhelmina visits the exhibition. Upon her entrance, she is given flowers by the daughter of Mr. Damme, a member of the Board of Directors. The Queen takes a tour of the trade fair building.
Before 1921, three editions of the exhibition had been held in and around the buildings of the Fruithal and the Korenbeurs. These buildings were built at the end of the 19th century on the site of the former Vredenburg castle, in order to provide space for the markets. But the trade fair had grander aspirations: the 'first permanent’ trade fair building that Prince Hendrik opens in this film was built on the site of the Fruithal. The Korenbeurs had to make way in 1926, and the new building that took its place was demolished in 1970 to make room for the Hoog Catharijne shopping mall.
