Bulldog Drummond

Summary

Fed up with inaction after his demobilization, Captain Hugh Drummond, nicknamed Bulldog, advertises for a job that will bring him some excitement. His advertisement is answered by Phyllis Benton, who suspects the inhabitants of a nursing home next door to the house where she lives with her uncle, James Handley. As a matter of fact, the home is bogus and run by an international gang of spies and crooks headed by Karl Peterson, who have her uncle in their power. They compel him to forge documents to help them in their villainy.

Drummond steps into the gang as they abduct Hiram Travers, an American shipping king. Their object is to compel him to sign away a large sum of money. Faced with forging the victim's signature, Handley shoots himself. Drummond corners the gang and rescues Travers, only to be himself captured. From then on the story runs through a breathless network of plot and counter-plot, thrills and tense situations. In the end the villainous Doctor Lakington meets the fate he meant for Drummond, the rest of the gang is rounded up, and the daring ex-officer wins the love of Phyllis.
